PrivacyGuard to protect Sainsbury's Bank customers

Sainsbury's Bank is taking steps to protect its customers against the growing problem of identity theft by introducing specialist cover.

According to Sainsbury's Bank identity theft has grown by 500 per cent since 1999, with nine per cent of the adult population in the UK having fallen victim to it.

In order to help combat the problem Sainsbury's Bank is offering to provide its customers with PrivacyGuard protection cover, allowing them to monitor their credit status through regular reports and identify and irregularities quickly.

Through PrivacyGuard Sainsbury's Bank customers will also receive reimbursement of up to £10,000 if their identity is stolen, providing peace of mind for those concerned.

But while PrivacyGuard protection can help, Sainsbury's Bank is quick to point out that it is not the solution to the problem.

Donald MacLeod, credit card manager at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "Identity theft is a very serious problem and one that is getting much worse, so we all need to take greater care in protecting ourselves.

"This could involve having a policy in place to protect against this crime, but it should also involve taking steps to reduce the chances of ID thieves being able to steal your personal details."
