House prices down this Christmas

A slight decrease to the average property price in the UK has been attributed to seasonal factors by a spokesperson from John charcol, the independent mortgage advisor.

Average prices have slipped by 0.3 per cent according to figures released by property specialists Rightmove and have been found to have dropped in seven out of ten regions across the UK.

Ray Boulger commented that he sided with the figures but he dismissed Rightmove's claims that people were pricing aggressively so that they could seal a sale before Christmas as "a bit of a nonsense".

When asked if he was surprised by Rightmove's housing market figures, Mr Boulger said: "Not particularly. Rightmove themselves made the point that this was probably largely seasonal and the market tends to slow down in December."

"I am not sure about their comment that people price their properties more aggressively because they want to sell quickly," he added.

The fall in house prices of 0.3 per cent represents £582 in monetary terms and this could prove to be the catalyst for a bout of Christmas cheer as buyers pick up a relative 'bargain'.
