Shepherds come bearing gifts

A child that is born at approximately 18:26 GMT or thereabouts on Christmas Day this year will be the recipient of £25 per month put into a tax-exempt plan by Shepherds Friendly Society.

This offer will last until the child reaches the age of 18 and is planned to coincide with the Shepherds Friendly Society's 180th birthday. Parents of babies born within a 25-mile radius of Manchester city centre are the only ones who need apply.

The society encourages children to start saving for their future from a young age and currently offers two accounts, the Junior Moneymaker and Young Saver Plan aimed at encouraging youngsters to save.

"Shepherds will invest £25 per month until the child is 18 years old and, based on an assumed growth rate of seven per cent per year, it could be worth £8,100 - and I'd like to think that it will encourage him or her to continue saving for their future," stated Geoff Spencer, chief executive of Shepherds Friendly Society.

Shepherds Friendly Society was founded back in 1826 on December 25th, making it one of the oldest mutual insurers in the world.
