Over half 'at risk' if they cannot work

Due to the continuing rise of both council tax and utility bills, the Alliance & Leicester has found that over half of British citizens would not be able to cope financially if they were unable to work for an extended amount of time.

The new research shows that 51 per cent of workers in the UK would be unable to manage if they were the victim of an accident, became unemployed or suffered an illness, representing a total of more than 14 million people.

This is due in part to the fact that 21 per cent of those surveyed said that they currently do not have any insurance or sufficient savings to get by should they get into financial hardship.

Lindsey Henson, manager for protection at Alliance & Leicester, stated: "It's easy when you're busy with your working life to take the security of a monthly income for granted. However, if you become ill, suffer an accident or are made redundant then you may be unable to earn an income."

She added: "It is vitally important to consider what measures you can put in place to ensure you can continue to meet your financial commitments and maintain a reasonable standard of living."

In collaboration with Legal & General, Alliance & Leicester offers life and critical illness cover that aims to provide a lump sum for the policy holder's family should they die.
