Scotland sees UK's biggest house price rise

Though Scotland has the least expensive house prices in the UK, it is also witnessing a higher rate of house price growth, says the Bank of Scotland.

New research by the bank discovered that Aberdeen is displaying the sharpest rise in property prices with an increase of 27 per cent occurring this year.

Aberdeen also proved to be the only Scottish city featuring in the top 20 UK towns and cities in terms of best performance in the property market.

Tim Crawford, group economist at the Bank of Scotland said: "More generally it has been another year of above average house price growth in Scotland. House price growth north of the border continues to outpace the UK average and this trend is expected to continue into 2007."

Kilmarnock and Motherwell were both found to have similar house price growth to Aberdeen with an increase of 25 per cent.

The overall best performing town in the UK during 2006 for house price growth was Newry in Ireland which saw a rise of 54 per cent, giving it an average price of £198,465, according to the Bank of Scotland.
