Nationwide: Look out for bank fees abroad

Holidaymakers are being advised by Nationwide Building Society to make themselves aware of bank charges relating to using their bank cards abroad this winter.

According to the building society, in excess of £70 million was spent by Britons last winter on foreign usage fees and consequently, people have been urged to take advantage of a Nationwide credit or debit card which are is free to use abroad.

Last summer, Nationwide customers were some £6.5 million better off by using one of its credit cards, the building society stated.

Jeremy Wood, divisional director at Nationwide, commented: "Whilst recovering from the big Christmas spend, those planning to go abroad this winter should be aware of the hidden charges that most card providers impose which people can ill-afford at this, or anytime of the year."

Among the cards that the building society offers is the Nationwide Comic Relief card that donates £6 to the charity on behalf of the cardholder when first used and then 0.5 per cent of any purchase thereafter.
