Burglaries down during December

Burglars appear to have been willing to adhere to the old adage "Christmas is the time of good will" after it emerged that robberies were down in December compared to the year before.

Thefts and burglaries were found to have decreased by 30 per cent last month over December 2005, according to Liverpool Victoria.

However, with so many people purchasing expensive gifts for friends and loved ones, the average claim during this period was "significantly" higher than in other times of the year with an average pay out payout of £1,456.

Peter Horton, Liverpool Victoria's operations director of general insurance, stated: "It's reassuring to think that fewer people had their Christmas ruined by the trauma of burglary than in previous years.

"The presence of more people at home during the holiday season may have deterred burglars, as will any extra security measures taken by householders to protect the valuable presents under the tree."

Liverpool Victoria is currently offering all new customers a ten per cent discount when they purchase home insurance online.
