Alliance & Leicester car insurance 'doesn't live up to reputation'

A leading car insurance expert has expressed his disappointment at Alliance & Leicester's recently launched offer.

Peter Gerrard, insurance researcher at price comparison website Moneysupermarket, said it was regrettable that the "established" personal finance provider had failed to shake up the market with its first car insurance product.

"[Alliance & Leicester] has a fantastic reputation for producing products which regularly top the best buy table topping products … yet when dipping their toes into the insurance arena it kicks off with a lacklustre average offering," he commented.

But Mr Gerrard had some praise for the new Alliance & Leicester car insurance deal.

"There are some useful features to the policy, such as a replacement car if the policyholder's damaged vehicle is less than a year old and your no-claims discount will be intact if you claim for emergency medical treatment or damage to the glass," he pointed out.

But Mr Gerrard said the Alliance & Leicester car insurance policy is not competitively priced, with the Post Office deal coming in at more than £70 cheaper.

He added that the Alliance & Leicester car insurance policy will possibly be repriced in the future to offer a better deal, but in the meantime, customers should shop around for the best deal.

The new Alliance & Leicester car insurance offering claimed to beat any renewal quote by £10.

Alliance & Leicester's insurance manager Nathan Barber-Kebby said this "unbeatable" offer challenges "established players in the market".
