Sainsbury's warns of 'frosting' car crime

Sainsbury's Bank is warning motorists to watch out for so-called frosting car crime as the January weather takes a turn for the worse.

It says that drivers who leave their cars unattended while they warm up the engine risk having their vehicles stolen by opportunist thieves.

It estimates that as many as 121,730 households fell victim to this type of car crime, dubbed frosting, between 2000 and 2005 and is urging motorists to take care this winter.

Richard Clark, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, said: "Many thieves are opportunistic and will look to steal your car if you leave it running unattended.

"We are concerned that the predicted extreme cold weather will result in more people taking this risk and becoming victims of frosting."

As well as leading to an increase in incidents of frosting the cold weather sweeping across the country this week could lead to hazardous driving conditions.

Sainsbury's is therefore warning motorists to take the necessary precautions, such as having their car serviced, checking oil, water and brake fuel levels and carrying antifreeze and a mobile phone whilst on the road.
