Loan sharks to be targeted

Chancellor Gordon Brown has declared that he is to pledge more funds to combat loan sharks across the UK who are using intimidation to settle debts.

Each region in Britain will be given access to a specialist team whose role it is to eradicate the criminals who are offering vulnerable people loans only to extort huge repayments by way of threatening violence.

Following a trial in Birmingham and Glasgow, the government initiative is to be rolled out in Liverpool, West Yorkshire and Sheffield by the end of 2007 and all regions by 2008.

Economic secretary to the Treasury Ed Balls said: "Loan sharks are a blight on some of the least well-off communities and so I am pleased to see the success we are already having in tackling these criminals and helping their victims."

The government's tough stance was praised by deputy director of policy at the National Consumer Council Claire Whyley who said that by removing the criminals, people will be able to get cheaper loans without suffering intimidation.
