Apacs targets ATM crime

In order to raise awareness of cash machine crime prevention, Apacs - the UK payments association - has launched a two-pronged attack on criminals.

It is responding to recent crime figures released by the British Crime Survey which highlight an increase in personal theft of 14 per cent for the period between July and September last year.

Among a range of tips provided by Apacs, people are urged to consider those around them while frequenting a cash machine, avoiding ATMs where people surrounding it are acting suspiciously. They must always shield their pin from others.

Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs, said: "The overwhelming majority of cash machine withdrawals take place crime free, but cardholders still need to be aware of the common sense steps to take when you use a cash machine.

"These guidelines are designed to provide helpful tips and advice on how to minimise the risk of becoming a victim of this type of crime."

Also, Apacs is in the process of working with the Local Government Association and has proposed a so-called privacy zone being implemented at ATMs whereby an area is designated in front of the cash machine solely for the machine user.
