Climate change affects skiers, says Halifax Home Insurance

Skiers are finding it increasingly hard to find a resort that meets their requirements due to the effects of a changing climate, according to research conducted by Halifax Travel Insurance.

In the Alps, there has been a 40 per cent decrease in the amount of resorts offering holidaymakers a good standard of skiing and snow boarding facilities.

A major factor behind this is climate change, says Halifax Travel Insurance, with a third of total snow in the Alps expected to have disappeared by 2030.

David Rochester, head of pricing at Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "In less than 25 years, winter package holidays and chalet breaks may be regarded as expensive luxuries. Contemporary travel insurance pricing models for winter sports holidays will have to be revised as the risk to participants' increases."

The cost of visiting traditional ski resorts could spiral if the current climate change trend continues as extreme weather conditions in places like the Alps will result in insurance policies rocketing.

Research was carried out by Bill McGuire, professor of geohazards and director of the Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre on behalf of Halifax and he found that 40 per cent of all alpine ski resorts could suffer financially or be made bankrupt in under 25 years.
