Halifax starts dormant account campaign

Halifax is helping consumers to reclaim bank accounts which had become dormant -becoming the first financial provider to start such a campaign.

As part of the process, the savings institution will reunite some £44 million held in approximately 110,000 old and unused Halifax savings and bank accounts.

London is the area with the highest proportion of unclaimed money, with consumers so far having failed to claim some £15.5 million.

Some 18 per cent of the money remains unclaimed by consumers in the north of the country.

Mike Regnier, head of savings at the group, said: "Our job is to reunite as many of our customers as is possible with their cash."

"We are launching our reunification campaign today so that we have as much time as possible to get the cash back to its owners," he added.

To reactivate a Halifax account, consumers can visit the group's website to download claims forms.
