Non-smokers make life insurance 'savings'

Giving up smoking could enable consumers to cut their life insurance premiums by up to £4,000, new research carried out by Moneysupermarket shows.

Ahead of a smoking ban coming into force in the summer, the price comparison site shows how a number of insurers offer markedly different rates for those who refrain from the habit.

While monthly premiums offered by Legal and General to smokers amount to £19.15, a non-smoker can pay just £10.65 for a package.

Over the course of a 25-year life insurance plan, a non-smoker could therefore save some £2,550.

Emma Walker, head of life insurance at Moneysupermarket, said that consumers had to show they had not been smoking for a year in order to qualify for life insurance premium savings.

"The difference in premiums between a smoker and a non-smoker is vast and there are significant additional savings to be made simply by shopping around for the cheapest deal to suit your circumstances," she added.
