Insuring valuable home contents 'crucial'

Young professionals are being encouraged to insure themselves against the theft of their valuables – with collecting with investment in mind becomingly increasingly popular.

Research carried out by Zurich suggests that young professionals are coming alive to the potential represented by valuables.

According to Zurich's figures, first edition books and comics are the most popular form of collectible, with over one in ten people saving them.

Other popular collectibles include stamps and medals, vinyl records, cigarette cards and glassware.

Return potential is also strong on such valuables, with Zurich estimating that an average £2,000 investment could rise to £6,123 in five years, an increase of 190 per cent.

However, despite the valuable nature of such collectibles, many Britons are taking a lax attitude to them, with almost a third not possessing home contents insurance.

Martin Hall, head of personal lines underwriting at Zurich, said: "We would advise anyone with a collection of valuable items in their home to keep their insurance company or broker up to speed to make sure they're covered in the event of accident, loss of theft."
