Legal & General critical illness package 'extended'

Legal & General has broadened its critical illness package by covering three additional illnesses.

The UK's number one critical illness provider has also created wider definitions for some illnesses, which it is hoped will provide greater clarity for consumers.

The changes to the Legal & General critical illness package follow the Association of British Insurers' release of a statement of best practice in 2006, which incorporates a number of different features.

This includes removing the categories of core and additional terms, using more descriptive headings for illnesses and extending the number of conditions for which a model definition is available.

Bonnie Burns, Legal & General's protection marketing director, said: "I believe we have successfully created the market-leading critical illness product whilst refining the definitions for the types of critical illness that we cover and adding three new illnesses to the policy."

The group's research also shows that over three-quarters of financial advisers say that a providers' reputation for paying claims is crucial to their customer.
