N&P: Green mortgage availability 'growing'

Abbey and HBOS' announcement that they will be entering the green loans market is good news for the market, according to Norwich and Peterborough (N&P) Building Society.

The group, which was the first provider to offer green mortgages in 1998 in order to encourage homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient, said that more people would come into contact with such products as they were being offered by large financial providers.

Richard Barker, product manager for mortgages at the group, said: "Any kind of additional coverage we can get on these deals is seen as positive…[in] increasing awareness, getting the message out there for the public."

He added: "Not many lenders in the market are offering these types of product. So as soon as we see other lenders – recently Abbey and HBOS have jumped onto the bandwagon – as soon as they come on board, awareness will increase also."

For every person that takes on an N&P mortgage, the group will plant 40 trees, with a standard minimum advance being £20,000.
