Halifax Home Insurance: Adequate insurance package 'crucial'

Consumers are being encouraged to ensure they have adequate home contents cover to negate the impact of being a victim of theft.

Figures from Halifax indicate that a quarter of British adults have been victims of crime over the last five years, at a cost of £8.3 billion.

While mobile phones (44 per cent) are the most popular items to be stolen by thieves, other items being nabbed include jewellery, stolen clothing, cameras and iPods.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Householders can protect themselves against the financial costs of theft by ensuring they have adequate home insurance cover that protects them for the loss or theft of items when outside the home."

Halifax insurance packages provide cover for items stolen out of the home, although the group has said that some claims may be invalidated by people who have not taken due care of their possessions.
