Halifax insurance gives cyclists 'peace of mind'

Britons' desire to use their push bikes in ever greater numbers is a trend to be lauded – but it is being taken advantage of by callous thieves.

Research carried out by Halifax indicates that some 439,000 bikes are stolen each year in Britain, a ten per cent increase on the previous year.

Despite more people having rekindled what is usually a childhood love of bikes, the group's research indicates that bike theft is hitting pockets hard, with some £146 million being lost each year.

Londoners are most at risk of theft, according to the survey, with Kingston, Cambridge and Bristol also figuring highly in the theft stakes.

While purchasing a comprehensive Halifax insurance package might be one of the best ways to protect a bike from being stolen, the group has also identified a number of ways in which people can keep their bike safe.

Using hardened steel U-type locks, marking your postcode with an ultraviolet pen on the bike and considering the use of anti-pry devices are all measures being lauded by the group.
