Legal & General: Saving mentality 'strong' among Britons

Britons adopted a more rigorous approach to the saving of their finances last month than during the same period in 2006, new research shows.

Legal & General's MoneyMood survey indicates that 60 per cent of Britons were in a saving mood last month, compared to 57 per cent in the same month during 2006.

Britons are not keen on spending their hard-earned cash either, with the survey showing that just 26 per cent of Britons were keen to spend, the lowest April figure in three years.

Despite a number of interest rate rises having been experienced by Britons in recent times, Julia Clayworth, wealth management customer marketing manager at the group, said that they had not hugely impacted upon the ability to save.

"However, the recent rise in inflation figures mean the prospect of a base rate hike this month is much more likely than not," she said.

She added: "If rates do move closer to six per cent we would expect to see people's ability to save beginning to fall away."
