Take measures to counter flooding

Homeowners can take a number of simple steps to counter the threat of their home being flooded, research from Halifax Home Insurance shows.

With many parts of northern England, the Midlands and central Wales having struggled with flooding in recent times, the group says that measures can be taken to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

Before floods hit a home, mains supplies should be turned off, sandbags placed outside doors, while as much furniture as possible should be moved upstairs.

Large objects which cannot be moved upstairs should be weighed down with sandbags to ensure they don't float around.

Vicky Emmott, senior manager for underwriting at Halifax, says: "The number of homes at risk of flood has trebled in recent years but there are several simple steps homeowners can take before a flood hits that can go a long way towards minimising water damage."

Halifax Home Insurance offers unlimited buildings cover and home emergency cover.

A 24-hour emergency helpline is also offered by Halifax Home Insurance, which can provide homeowners with useful advice and information.
