Latest card scam hits pubs

A new scam is hitting pubs trying to sell paper rolls for PDQ credit and debit card readers.

Entitled Merchant Retail Supplies, the company has pretended to be HSBC's new supplier and has reportedly quoted a price of £105 for a single paper, whilst it is actually available from HSBC for just £15.86.

Pubs are now being targeted and victims of the scam are being asked to contact their local trading standards office.

A spokesman for HSBC told The Publican: "Unfortunately, we have come across this company before. They are nothing to do with us and we don't have any preferred supplier for these products.

"We understand that Merchant Retail Supplies is being investigated by a number of local Trading Standards departments, our advice to anyone contacted is to report them immediately."

Consumers are also being warned of another version of the scam, whereby rolls and head cleaning cards are sent direct to businesses without an order and are accompanied by an invoice requesting payment.
