Joint account holders 'dispute-ridden'

Couples who have joint bank accounts may not enjoy the smoothest of financial relationships, new research from Abbey shows.

The group estimates that of the 5.5 million joint account holders in Britain, approximately a fifth have accessed money without letting their partner know.

Over a quarter of respondents in Abbey's poll said they had argued over the use of a joint account, while a similar percentage also said they were suspicious of their other half.

Commenting on how couples can alleviate the financially-influenced disputes, Steve Shore, Abbey's head of banking, said: "It's important that couples are open and honest with each other from the start and discuss exactly what the joint account rules are, to avoid arguments at a later date."

The research of 1,000 adults also showed that couples in the south-east are the least harmonious with regard to their accounts, with over a third disagreeing over their joint accounts.

Scottish people are believed to be least likely to dispute their financial situation, with just one in ten falling out over the issue.
