Abbey account 'competitive'

Abbey is offering a highly competitive interest rate of eight per cent for those people who switch to the group's current account package.

Available from July 2nd, the eight per cent rate of interest will be paid on balances of up to £2,500.

The Abbey account rate will also be offered on condition that consumers pay in at least £1,000 to their account, essentially meaning it will be used as a main account.

Describing the account, upon which interest will be paid out on a monthly basis, Steve Shore, head of banking at the group, said that customers privileged a "great rate" above all other criteria on a current account.

"We want to show customers of the 'big four' banks they have a choice and they have no reason to stay with a current account that doesn't offer great value," Mr Shore commented.

He added: "Our eight per cent account is a whopping 80 times more valuable than a standard bank account, which typically pays 0.1 per cent on balances."
