Nationwide: House price growth 'bounces back' in June

House price growth in the UK bounced back from a relatively slow period in May 2007, the latest Nationwide monthly survey claims.

House prices increased by 1.1 per cent during May, the fastest monthly increase experienced in 2007.

The price of a typical house is now £184,070, compared to £181,584 last month.

Annual house price inflation also moved well over the double digit mark between May and June, increasing from 10.3 per cent to 11.1 per cent during the month.

Nationwide believes that the rate of house price growth is set to slow during the second half of 2007 however, forecasting growth of between five and eight per cent during the period.

"In spite of the bounce in June's data we still believe that the underlying trend in house price growth is softening," said Fionnuala Earley, Nationwide's chief economist.

Ms Earley said that falling house purchase approvals, a reduction in new buyer enquiries and a "squeezing" of new entrants to the buy-to-let market would "slow the growth of this sector and also take some pressure off house price growth".
