Sainsbury's Pet Insurance warns over obesity

Sainsbury's Pet Insurance has warned pet owners over giving their cats and dogs too many tasty treats.

In new research, the insurer has estimated that 34 per cent of the UK's combined cat and dog population are suffering from obesity.

Dog owners spend an average of £209 a year on feeding their pet, which is the equivalent of 550 tins of dog food. For cat owners, the average yearly figure is £167, which equates to 491 cans.

"Many pet owners may like to treat their animals with food and snacks intended for human consumption, but they must be aware of the detrimental effect this can have on their pet's health," warned Claire Moyles, manager of Sainsbury's Pet Insurance.

She added that owners should choose foods from nutritionally-balanced and low-calorie ranges.

Earlier this month, Rebecca Ralph of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals urged people to take out pet insurance to avoid being stung with high veterinary bills.
