Halifax Home Insurance warns of summer perils

The number of accidents which happen in the home increases by almost a quarter in the summer months, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

A rise of 23 per cent has been identified in the number of claims made during school summer holidays.

In fact, the insurer claims that one-fifth of all claims it receives during the year relate to incidents that take place in July or August.

Glasgow is the UK's hotspot for summer claims, with an average cost of home damage of £564.73.

Also in the top five most accident-prone cities are Edinburgh, Newcastle, Merseyside and Cardiff and West Valleys.

"It's particularly important at this time of year for parents to check their home insurance policies and make sure they are covered for accidental damage to the home and contents," said Vicky Emmott, senior manager of Underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance.

The report follows that of moneysupermarket.com, which claimed that home insurance applications in the flood-stricken areas of the West Midlands, Hull, Doncaster and Sheffield increased by 300% in June, compared with May, Finance Markets reports.
