Admiral advises young drivers to choose cars 'sensibly'

Car insurance provider Admiral has advised young male drivers to resist the urge to buy a fast car when they pass their test.

James Carnduff, spokesman for the insurer, said that the type of car a young man buys after getting their licence is a "big factor" when premiums are assessed.

The desire to have a car with a big engine, he claims, will only add to premiums that are already high on account of a perceived youthful recklessness.

Mr Carnduff recommended that young drivers should think smaller and gain experience before going for that dream motor.

"By getting that experience, it will make them a safer driver - you're less likely to have a claim [and] to have a conviction," he said.

"Over a few years of safe driving you can decrease your premiums considerably."

According to the Association of British Insurers, 12 per cent of all those killed on Britain's roads in 2005 were aged 16-19, up from ten per cent in 2000.
