Better map reading could spell lower car insurance, says esure

An inability to read maps could mean motorists are getting themselves into dangerous situations that might increase their premiums, esure car insurance has claimed.

The insurer has released new figures that reveal 35 per cent of the UK's drivers are unable to read a basic map.

A reliance on satellite navigation systems would appear to be replacing the need for map reading skills, with eight per cent of those polled admitting they could not live without the technology.

Commenting on the figures, Scott Sinclair from Ordnance Survey said: "Technology is great but the batteries won't run out on a paper map."

And Colin Batabyal, director of underwriting and business development at esure, said: "Better map reading means safer driving, which in turn ensures our customers can be offered as low a premium as possible."

Earlier this year, research from the insurer revealed that 92 per cent of people with gardens intend to spend a collective £56 million on their outdoor spaces over the summer.
