Halifax Travel Insurance warns against beach theft

Holidaymakers have been warned to "remain vigilant at all times" by Halifax Travel Insurance.

According to the insurer, a beach bag can now contain up to £1,000 worth of goods, including mobile phones, mp3 players, digital cameras and currency.

With 13 per cent of all incidents of theft experienced by Brits occurring near the beach or pool, people need to be particularly careful, said Paul Birkhead, underwriting manager at Halifax Travel Insurance.

"Long gone are the days when the contents of a beach bag included no more than a towel, sun cream and a few warm sandwiches," he claimed.

"Today's beach bag is a fashion statement and holiday makers like to make sure they have all their fashion accessories to hand."

Earlier this month, Halifax Home Insurance advised those looking to take advantage of the warm weather by heading out for a picnic to keep a close guard of their belongings.
