Direct Line: Reassess contents insurance after big buys

People who have bought expensive items should make sure they have their home contents insurance reassessed, according to Direct Line.

The insurer said that people should notify their provider if they bring items such as art and jewellery into their home.

Such luxury goods will be assessed on a "case by case basis", claimed Carmel McCarthy, spokesperson for Direct Line.

"It's vitally important that people reassess their home contents, because we keep adding things to our home [which are] sometimes of great value and we don't tend to consider the contents insurance we have in place," she said.

The number of household burglaries in England and Wales totalled around 733,000 in 2005-06, according to Home Office figures.

As well as offering home, life and travel insurance products, Direct Line claims to be the UK's leading insurer of cars, providing 13,000 quotes a day.
