Halifax Student Credit Card launched

Halifax has launched its Student Credit Card with an APR of 17.9 per cent.

The card, which will be available to students with or without a Halifax current account, comes complete with a maximum credit limit of £500 and a minimum repayment of £5 or five per cent, depending on which is the lower.

In order to keep the holder up to date with their balance, the bank will send a free weekly text message. It will also send a free monthly alert reminding them of the payment due.

"Halifax already boasts a market leading student current account and our student credit card is no exception," said Ken Stannard, head of Halifax Credit Cards.

"We offer students a lower APR than rivals such as Lloyds TSB and NatWest."

According to Halifax's Student Finances Survey, 43 per cent of UK students have credit cards. The average student debt, including overdrafts and loans, is £7,502.
