The product provider conducted a survey of holidaymakers who have booked travel insurance through agents in the past year and found that 17 per cent were not asked if they have a pre-existing medical condition.
In 13 per cent of cases, the adviser did not describe the level of cover their policy offers, while nine per cent of buyers were told that they needed to book travel insurance to secure the trip.
Steve Johnson, Sainsbury's head of travel insurance, said that people might be tempted to purchase cover from the travel agent "when the pressure is on".
However, he argued: "The only way to be sure you get the cover appropriate for all your needs at a price that's right is to shop around."
Halifax Travel Insurance recently claimed that a beach bag can now contain up to £1,000 worth of goods, including mobile phones, mp3 players, digital cameras and currency.
