LV= warns of risky side of recycling

People who leave items outside their homes to be recycled run the risk of advertising their home contents to burglars, LV= has claimed.

New research from the insurer claims that 16.35 million Brits put packaging from new purchases outside their houses, while 5.3 million throw old goods out to be recycled.

However, such environmentally-minded measures could in fact be advertising the presence of new and expensive goods within, Martin Milliner at LV= said.

"If consumers want to reduce the risk of burglary, telltale signs of expensive belongings should not be left outside as this makes homes look like 'yard sales' to thieves," he said.

Mr Milliner recommended that people take waste products directly to the dump, or else keep them indoors until the recycling collection day arrives.

Last week, Direct Line advised people who have bought expensive items to make sure they have their home contents insurance reassessed.
