Saga Home Insurance: Garden furniture can attract thieves

Saga has warned homeowners to make sure they are covered for expensive garden furniture.

The over-50s specialist claimed that it is not always feasible for people to put garden furniture away every day - which can attract "opportunistic thieves".

Barbecues, patio heaters, furniture, ornaments and bird tables are all items which could be coveted by criminals, according to John Potter, director of Saga.

"Even the more modest garden furniture sets can cost hundreds and whilst many policies, like Saga's, do provide cover as standard it is important for people to check to ensure their cover truly reflects the value of their set," he said.

He added that an increasing number of gardening programmes on TV proves how important outdoor areas have become to homeowners these days.

Recently, the Target Group Index revealed that more than one million people in the UK spent £150 on plants alone between April 2006 and March 2007.
