Halifax Pet Insurance reveals pet owner habits

Many Britons are devoted to their pets and use them as a substitute for human friendships, research from Halifax has found.

Almost three million Britons who are in relationships still let their cat or dog share their bed, the survey found.

And 1.1 million of those who own pets make their animals fresh meals rather than relying on tinned food.

Those that in are not in relationships often rely on their pets to alleviate loneliness. Dr Roger Mugford, an animal psychologist, said: "More and more people are waiting longer to settle down, get married and have children.

"Others are spending more time in virtual relationships conducted over the internet. But we still need to stimulate our base instincts to nurture, love and protect. Owning a pet allows them to re-establish that link."

Meanwhile, Sainsbury's Insurance has cautioned pet owners not to give their animals too many treats, as it is not healthy. A full 34 per cent of Britain's cats and dogs are obese, the insurer stated.
