Halifax reveals mortgage holders' DIY trends

Britain's enthusiasm for DIY is set to continue as mortgage holders seek to make their properties more valuable, a survey from Halifax has found.

A quarter of homeowners that performed DIY in last year did so to add value to their homes, the Halifax survey found.

And over half of those that did so believe that their work could add up to £5,000 to their properties.

Patrick Sawdon, Halifax Valuers, said: "Our research shows that Britain has become a nation of movers and improvers.

"It's great to see that so many people are investing time and effort in improving their home."

However, Mr Sawdon did go on to caution against alterations to a property that might actually subtract from its overall value. Consulting with professionals is advisable, he said.

Refurbished kitchens and extensions are generally believed by mortgage holders to be the most valuable changes, the Halifax research found.

Meanwhile, another recent survey from Halifax found that the average price of a house in England and Wales has almost reached £200,000.
