Nationwide home insurance 'could cover kids at uni'

Parents whose children are heading to university in the coming weeks could benefit from checking whether their goods are covered under the household insurance policy, Nationwide has said.

Today's students are arriving at their digs with increasingly expensive belongings, such as iPods, laptops and mobile phones, which can be expensive to insure.

These, added to the cost of tuition fees, books and rent, make it more important than ever that parents check whether their home insurance covers their child against loss, damage and burglary, Nationwide's insurance director Robin Bailey claimed.

"Student policies can be expensive but if cover is provided under their own policy parents can make sure their child's possessions are protected while in their student accommodation without extra cost," he continued.

Last week, Direct Line Home Insurance warned students to ensure that their bicycles are insured before heading off to campus.
