Seek help, advises TaxDebts

People struggling to pay off debts accrued through unpaid taxes have been advised to seek help.

According to TaxDebts, many people - particularly those involved in pay as you earn schemes or the self employed - get "bogged down" in tax matters and can struggle to get on top of the problem.

Rachel Fish, commercial manager of the financial services firm, added that there is a lot of "burying heads in sand" with taxation, as people are unwilling to face the problem.

"Like any kind of debt - you need to get it sorted," she said.

"You are responsible for your own tax - if you are hit with a tax bill then you pay it and people need to check and be educated on how the tax scheme works."

Figures released by the Chartered Institute of Taxation last May show that 42 per cent of taxpayers in the UK find it 'very' or 'fairly' difficult to work out whether they are paying the right level of tax.
