'More than 4 mobiles' owned by 9%

Almost one in ten people (9 per cent) have four or more mobile handsets, it has been claimed.

Research by first direct - a member of the HSBC group and a pioneer of text-message banking - reveals that with 71 million handsets being used in the UK, mobile phones are now outnumbering people.

Nevertheless, there are still 12 per cent of the population who do not have a mobile phone, the bank found.

Alison Leonard, first direct's head of e-commerce, said that the days of having just one mobile are "fast fading".

"With one phone for work, one for friends and potentially a personal organiser or BlackBerry as well, 'mobilemania' has swept the nation," she added.

Since the launch of the service in 1999, first direct has grown to send more than 40 million texts a year to its customers.

In a study published last month, Juniper Research predicted that a third of mobile users will be accessing broadband from their handsets by 2012.
