Churchill car insurance highlights parents' knowledge gap

Many parents are unaware of the law when it comes to keeping their children secure when driving, Churchill has claimed.

Since September 2006, children up to the age of 12, or those who are under 1.35 metres tall, must sit in safety seats when travelling.

However, the regulation did not register with 23 per cent of parents with children aged between three and 12.

"It's worrying to see that so many parents are either unaware or deliberately flouting the law," said Frances Browning, spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance.

"Irrespective of the reason, they are putting lives at risk."

Churchill will assist policyholders with the cost of replacing safety seats in the event of an accident.

Recent research by Churchill found that 42 per cent of infrequent drivers feel 'rusty' when they head out on to the road, while 11 per cent leave it more than two years before driving after passing their test.
