Nationwide offers home-buying tips for graduates

Nationwide has given graduates some advice regarding how to get on the property ladder in a climate of high house prices.

Clearing debts is one way in which first-time buyers can increase their chances of buying their first home, the building society suggests.

Sticking to a budget and arranging to regularly put money into some form of savings account are two more tips which could bring graduates closer to their goal, according to Nationwide.

It quotes statistics from its own index which state that the average first-time buyer currently spends £154,394 on their first home - which means that £8,000 must be saved to provide a five per cent deposit.

Finally, Nationwide advises that if graduates are "desperate to get on the property ladder but can't afford to go it alone, consider buying with friends". Nationwide offers mortgages targeted at friends buying a property together.

In July, Nationwide launched a new 25-year fixed-rate mortgage at a rate of 6.39 per cent.
