Legal & General reveals personal accounts attitudes

Legal & General has surveyed people in the UK on their opinions on the forthcoming personal accounts - and found the results to be "encouraging".

The government is set to introduce personal accounts in 2012 in order to encourage people to save money for retirement. The accounts will be operated on an 'opt-out' basis, so that people will automatically be given access.

According to Legal & General's survey, almost half of Britons will choose to remain in the scheme in 2012.

Enthusiasm for the accounts was strongest among those age groups least likely to have amassed significant savings. For example, 54 per cent of those aged between 16 and 24 said they would opt in.

Des Hamilton, technical director at The Pensions Advisory Service, commented that the savings account is only one measure people should be considering to secure their future.

"The big challenge for personal accounts is getting across the message that this is just the beginning, just a foot in the door," he said.
