Abbey Insurance reveals Brits are hoarders

Britons are storing as much as £50 million worth of items which they have inherited, according to Abbey Insurance.

A total of 53 per cent of those who have hand-me-downs they do not want keep them tucked away somewhere in their house, the survey reveals.

Meanwhile, 20 per cent of respondents said they sold their unwanted items and 15 per cent put the heirloom on display in their home even though they dislike it.

Prasad Shastri, head of Insurance Marketing at Abbey, commented: "Many people don’t want to pay to insure these unwanted items separately; however, should something happen to your home and you only have a limited sum policy, you may end up not recovering the full value of the items in your home.

"With an unlimited sum insured policy you will be less likely to be underinsured."

Last month, Abbey Insurance warned homeowners to be careful when using electric blankets in the winter months in case of fire.
