Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans reveals cost of green homes

Based on a three-bedroom semi-detached home, Alliance & Leicester has estimated various costs, from energy-saving light bulbs to solar panelled heating systems.
A range of these improvements could cost thousands but, Alliance & Leicester pointed out, would save hundreds of pounds a year on fuel bills and be less harmful to the environment.
Simple and cheap measures, such as opting for low-energy light bulbs, which use only a quarter of the electricity needed for a conventional bulb, will save about £65 across its lifetime.
Homeowners who want to go further could invest in a solar panel heating system, which start at about £5,000 and can save about £200 a year off an average bill, Alliance & Leicester estimated.
Environment-conscious householders could then choose green mortgages, the Co-operative Bank has suggested, on the launch of a collaboration with the Energy Saving Trust to reward those who try to reduce the carbon footprint of their home.
