NFU Mutual insurance warning

Expensive gifts bought and received by consumers during the Christmas period could surpass the financial cover provided under their home insurance policy, NFU Mutual has warned.

People looking to obtain cover for their valuables during the festive season may consider NFU Mutual's premium home insurance product, which offers increased cover during the month of December.

Those planning to cook a large and expensive Christmas dinner who incur a power cut would have their expenses covered under NFU Mutual's policy, said Laura Wood, spokesperson for the rural insurance provider.

Research by the firm has revealed that a fifth of consumers are planning to spend over £500 on friends and family members this Christmas.

"People do not consider the cumulative value of the gifts which they store or bring into their home during the festive season," Ms Wood said.

Some £53 billion will be spent in total by UK consumers this Christmas with £5.6 billion worth of purchases expected to be bought via the internet, according to figures from Apacs.
