Sainsbury's Home Insurance reveals consumer confusion

Millions of homebuyers think that they have to buy their buildings insurance from their mortgage lender to secure their mortgage, new research says.

As many as 2.94 people thought this was the case, according to Sainsbury's Home Insurance.

Nearly half of those with buildings insurance had bought direct from their mortgage provider but only 28 per cent of this group thought it was the best deal.

Sainsbury's advised that people should shop around for insurance, which could potentially save money.

Head of home insurance Steve Johnson said: "Buying a home is often a hectic time and for many people it may seem tempting to just purchase buildings cover from their mortgage provider."

"However people really should shop around to check they're getting the best deal."

An additional survey by Sainsbury's revealed that children and pets caused millions of pounds of accidental damage to homes and property over holiday periods.

Estimates based on a week-long half-term holiday showed a national total of £106 million of damage, exacerbated by poor weather when children spent more time indoors.
