Liverpool Victoria gives burglary protection advice

Locking windows and leaving the lights on in your home are among the "simple steps" that can help protect a person's property from burglars, it has been suggested.

Emma Holyer, spokesperson for mutual society Liverpool Victoria (LV), said it is surprising how many people leave their homes vulnerable to thieves.

"Clearly everyone’s got expensive gear in their home: TVs, electronics; but it’s the fact that people don’t even take the smallest of precautions," she said.

Leaving ladders in unlocked sheds is one mistake committed by homeowners, Ms Holyer noted.

Recent research by LV also found that 68 per cent of the 15 million Brits who leave themselves vulnerable to burglary, did so by leaving televisions, computers, antiques or their jewellery on display.

"If you are going out … maybe leave the light on inside, with curtains drawn, so that people think someone is in rather than that the property is empty," Ms Holyer advised.
