Abbey: Holiday shoppers go online

An increasing amount of people will be turning to the internet to do their Christmas shopping this year, according to new research from Abbey.

More than a third of Britons (36 per cent) will conduct their festive shopping online, the financial services provider states.

Abbey also finds that Christmas stress levels are rising, with more and more people suffering from festive distress disorder.

Roger Lovering, managing director of Abbey Credit Cards, said that "tiredness, overindulgence, office parties and the pressure to find that perfect gift" can all increase stress levels over Christmas.

"Reducing tension is paramount and consequently we're seeing retailers such as supermarkets making it easier to buy everything from puddings to presents under one roof or website," he added.

Last week, a study by Halifax suggested that UK adults will spend an estimated £11.92 billion on presents during this festive period.
