Tesco Pet Insurance warning about chocolate

In the run-up to Christmas, pet owners are being warned by Tesco Pet Insurance to make sure their domestic animals do not ingest holiday sweets.

The insurer explains that theobromine and caffeine - chemicals found in chocolate - can cause problems with a pet's digestive system and can even be deadly in high quantities.

Chocolate Christmas tree decorations or edible wrapped presents under the tree could be the potential sources of such a risk.

Allan Burns, head of Tesco Pet Insurance, commented: "Avoid unnecessary expense and stress over Christmas by staying away from the vets; make sure you take special precautions with keeping chocolate away from your pets.

"Every year around Christmas time, Tesco pet insurance customers claim for treatments for their dogs, overdosed on chocolate. Having your pet insured, helps you to keep the vet costs low."

In September, research from Halifax research suggested that as many as one million Britons use pets as a substitute for human companionship.
